  15. Novell Announces Multitasking, Networking DOS
  16.  
  17. SAN JOSE, CA--March 24, 1993--Reflecting the company's commitment
  18. to the world's largest installed operating system and the needs
  19. of DOS customers for enhanced functionality and better networking
  20. support, Novell today announced Novell DOS 7, the next generation
  21. DOS and a major upgrade to DR DOS 6.0.  Novell DOS 7, available
  22. this summer, will significantly extend DOS technology and enhance
  23. the core functionality of DR DOS by including integrated NetWare
  24. client support, peer-to-peer networking, a network management
  25. agent, network installation, pre-emptive multitasking, enhanced
  26. memory management and desktop security, as well as a suite of
  27. protected mode drivers.  Novell DOS 7 is the first major DOS
  28. upgrade to be released from Novell's Desktop Systems Group.

  30. Novell DOS 7 is designed to be easy to use, install and
  31. administer.  Its robust technology offers tighter integration 
  32. with NetWare and scalable solutions from the emerging palmtop 
  33. market to desktop PCs.  Novell's DOS 7 will also continue to 
  34. provide the best foundation for Microsoft Windows by offering 
  35. Drag-and-Drop network resource capabilities.  Novell DOS 7 
  36. benefits from another key technology known as DOS Protected 
  37. Mode Services (DPMS), an API that allows device drivers and 
  38. TSRs to reside in extended memory and executein protected 
  39. mode on 286, 386 and 486 computers.  DPMS greatly reduces 
  40. the demand for conventional memory, allowing customers to
  41. leverage more existing memory for applications.

  43. Having access to network services is a critical element in
  44. today's enterprise computing environment.  Novell recognizes 
  45. that as desktop operating systems evolve, they must continue 
  46. to be tightly integrated with the information and services 
  47. found in the NetWare environment, whether those desktop 
  48. systems are integrated into a workgroup or an enterprise solution.  
  49. "Novell DOS 7, our next product offering, is more tightly 
  50. integrated with NetWare," said Steve Tucker, Novell vice 
  51. president and general manager.  "Novell DOS 7 will increase 
  52. our lead over the competition in providing advanced DOS 
  53. system software, " he added.

  55. DOS Protected Mode Services

  57. DPMS is a DOS version-independent and Microsoft Windows-
  58. compatible API that provides protected mode support for 
  59. device drivers and TSRs.  By implementing DPMS, developers 
  60. can easily add functionality and reduce conventional 
  61. memory requirements of their programs.  The API is 
  62. available not as a Software Developers Kit (SDK) to 
  63. third party developers.  Developers will be able to
  64. license and distribute DPMS free of royalty charges.  
  65. Novell DOS 7 will include several DPMS client components 
  66. including disk cache and compression drivers, a peer-to-peer 
  67. server, and CD-ROM extensions.  The DPMS SDK is priced at 
  68. $195 and is available through Novell's Professional 
  69. Developers Program.

  87. SAN JOSE, CA--May 24, 1993--In another move to provide users with
  88. the most advanced DOS operating system available, Novell today
  89. announced the addition of fully integrated utilities from Fifth
  90. Generation Systems.  These utilities are designed to protect 
  91. users from virus infection and provide reliable, high
  92. performance backup all through easy to use, full screen
  93. interfaces.

  95. Fifth Generation is a leading developer of DOS, Microsoft
  96. Windows, Macintosh, UnixWare and NetWare utility software for 
  97. backup, anti-virus, security, recovery and communications.  
  98. Novell DOS 7, the next generation of DOS and a major upgrade to
  99. DR DOS 6.0, will be available this summer.

  111. Search & Destroy is Fifth Generation's anti-virus utility 
  112. for DOS and Microsoft Windows.  While memory resident, 
  113. Search & Destroy is the least memory intensive virus 
  114. monitor available in the industry. Also included is an 
  115. ongoing virus scanner and removal utility, to
  116. provide reliable protection for executable, compressed and 
  117. archived files.  Novell DOS 7 also includes Fifth Generation's 
  118. Fastback Express, a fully integrated backup and restore utility 
  119. for DOS and Microsoft Windows.  Utilizing DMA (Direct Memory 
  120. Access), Fastback Express provides high performance and reliable 
  121. backup and restore functionality to users.  Fastback Express 
  122. is NetWare-aware, ensuring preservation and restoration of 
  123. all NetWare file attributes, which saves time and is a 
  124. convenience factor for NetWare users using Novell DOS 7.

  127. memory management and multitasking features of Novell DOS 7, 
  128. together with the utilities from Fifth Generation, are an 
  129. example of Novell's continuing commitment to DOS customers.

  131. viruses and supports Drag and Drop functionality for Microsoft 
  132. Windows, allowing users to quickly scan individual files 
  133. and directories from Microsoft Windows.
